Did You Hear?

During the State of the Union address, President Biden referred to the killer of Laken Riley as an "illegal". Since then, he's been scolded by both members of his own party and the media for not using the approved term, "undocumented".

Though I wonder exactly who it is that's choosing and approving these labels, I'm fairly certain I know some of the reasons. irst, it helps those who hold certain beliefs identify each other; if someone you're speaking with is up on the current labels and lingo, there's a good chance you're all on the same team and are going to agree on most things. At that point, you can really speak your mind.

Secondly, it gives everyone a chance to be wrong. "Illegal" is by no means is pejorative word but, if used in to describe someone in this country illegally, it's wrong and you may be corrected, looked down upon, belittled, thought less of. An "illegal" is now an "undocumented, a "pedophile" is now "minor-attracted"...even a "UFO" is now a "UAP". If you're not using these terms, you're out of touch, unsophisticated or impolite. A boor.

In George Orwell's "1984", the Ministry of Truth was very interested in controlling language; since language is an expression of thought, using unapproved words -or words in an approved manner- betrayed you as being guilty of thoughtcrime, possibly the worst offense a citizen could be guilty of. In the world of "1984", the Thought Police were everywhere, watching everyone. Keep an eye out for them, won't you?
